Season Finale of HBO's "Big Love" Sunday, August 26th...

What will happen to Roman Grant? What will Albee do to avenge his father? Will Bill hold onto Weaver Gaming? Tune in tomorrow evening to HBO to see where this hit HBO show, "Big Love" takes us at the end of season two. I love this show; this is ensemble acting at its finest while provoking thought about the religious hot button that is polygamy. Kudos again to HBO for another, edgy, thought provoking show that covers an old issue in a very fresh and creative way. If you're not familiar with the show or if you're not a HBO subscriber check out Season One of "Big Love" on DVD via any of the rental or purchase links below. Remember, it's not TV it's HBO™ - I've always loved that tag line of HBO's.

Tips for Playing DVDs on Your New HDTV

This is a great solution I found to enjoy DVDs on my new SONY HDTV. I'll try to inform here without being boring. Here's the deal I will eventually purchase a HD / Blu-Ray DVD player but I'm not paying a thousand dollars while the two competing Hi-Def. formats battle it out. I'm old enough to remember the VHS versus BETAMAX videotape battle in the early days of video. SONY makes these really cool DVD players that connects via HDMI to my SONY HDTV but it UPCONVERTS the DVD so it takes advantage of the HD wide screen capabilities of the TV. It's not the same as a HD DVD but because it UPCONVERTS the signal it increases the lines of resolution so the picture quality is very good. I bought a 5 disk DVD model because I watch a lot of TV episodes on DVD and it's convenient being able to load 5 DVDs into the player. This works perfect for our needs while HD DVD players come down in price, plus I understand that you'll be able to buy HD DVD players that play both HD DVD and Blu-Ray, that makes the most sense to me so I'll wait for that but I love this slick little SONY Upconverting 5 Disk DVD player.

So I watch all this fantastic programming...

...on a SONY HDTV. We have the 50" SONY SXRD high definition rear projection (not the bulky old style this TV is only 18 inches deep. We purchased it last fall from Amazon.com and they shipped it to our door FREE SHIPPING and their price was incredible. The picture is 1080p, or 1080i the TV switches to whatever setting it reads from the content when you change channels. I really love this HDTV obviously I have a history with SONY TVs, I have owned SONY Trinitrons over the years. Watching native HD programming like the VOOM Network channels or FOOD NETWORK HD the color and detail still stops me in my tracks and I work in Hollywood so I'm used to the best quality audio and video. We're really enjoying having HDTV at home. I dumped our cable company in favor of DISH NETWORK because they have more HD channels than any other provider right now that includes cable tv companies and DirecTV. I love those VOOM Network channels, more on that in a separate post. This signal from DISH NETWORK is so clean and sharp and vibrant compared to the mushy signal from our local cable TV company. Even the standard definition (SD) programming is better from DISH NETWORK and looks amazing on our SONY SXRD HDTV. In a future post I'll tell you about this really cool SONY DVD player I have hooked up to our new HDTV...

HBO - Sunday Part Two

Sunday night also means, "Entourage" and as someone who has worked in Hollywood for over 20 years I can attest to the show's authenticity. The agent, Ari played by Jeremy Piven is the quintessential asshole Hollywood agent. Vince and his posse are a dime a dozen in Los Angeles but that's part of the vibe and color of L.A. The show is so well written, photographed, acted, directed, produced it's a great show and I laugh my ass off. You don't need to get all the inside jokes that are subtly sprinkled throughout each episode it's a great comedy for anyone who wants to look through a window into the crazy, indulgent world of Hollywood. Enjoy!

It's Not TV It's HBO...

Well, it's Sunday evening and for me that means curling up on the sofa with my dogs and watching HBO. The new lineup this season includes this compelling, thought provoking show entitled, "John From Cincinnati" by the creator of the now cancelled HBO show, "Deadwood." "John From Cincinnati" is an existential journey through the lens of surfing. The story centers around this southern California dysfunctional family with a surfing legacy that started with the father whose surfing career was ended prematurely due to a surfing accident, his son, Butchie was also a surfing prodigy but now he's a drug addict and Butchie's son, Sean is a child surfing prodigy. Sean ends up getting seriously injured in what should be a fatal surfing accident but...
